Filed under dice. How we score
What works
- Magnets slow the spin and hold the result, even if you jostle it
- Two indicator marks point right at the number
- Easy-to-read numbers
- Machine-precise, with real weight to it
- You can't help but spin it
What doesn't
- It's one d20, and not every game uses a d20
- $39 is a lot for a single die
- The necklace it ships with feels cheap
The Stellar Ring is a d20 you wear on your finger, and once it's on, you can't help but spin it. After Wand Dice, it's a breath of fresh air: usable, gorgeous, and nearly flawless. The one real catch is that it's $39 for a single die.
What I reviewed
The Stellar Ring from Astranova, a magnetic d20 dice ring, in the blue coating. I backed it on Kickstarter for $39. It came with a necklace so you can wear it around your neck too.
Look
I dig the clean, mechanical look and feel. The blue coating I picked is clean and gorgeous, and the numbers are easy to read.
Look: 20.
Usability
The magnets inside slow the spin and bring it to a stop. Two indicator marks on the side point right at the number on the face, so you can read your roll at a glance. And you can jostle it without the die free-spinning and losing the number you landed on.
That's everything Wand Dice got wrong, done right.
The ding is that it's a d20, and only a d20. Not every game uses one. Astranova is running a Stellar Ring II campaign for a full set of rings, which may be the answer for games that need more dice.
Usability: 13.
Quality
The die itself is gorgeous, with machine precision and the weight you'd expect from a mechanical piece like this. The necklace they sent with it so you can wear it feels cheap, though. I'm counting it because it's part of the package.
Quality: 19.
Value
This one's tough for me. It's gorgeous, but is one d20 worth nearly $40? Something around $29 would have brought this to a full 20. At $39, I have to ding it.
Value: 15.
Who it's for
Anyone who plays d20 games and wants a die that's always on hand and fun to fidget with. If your table runs on other dice, keep an eye on the full set.
The verdict
A 17 out of 20. Beautiful, precise, and genuinely fun to use. You're paying a premium for one die, and that's the only thing holding it back.
